Airbus to Redesign Its Most Comfortable Narrow-Body Aircraft

Airbus is set to make changes to its A220 narrow-body aircraft, which is considered the most comfortable in the manufacturer’s narrow-body lineup.

Starting in 2026, the A220 will be delivered with the new Airspace cabin interior. The main feature of the updated design will be larger overhead bins for carry-on luggage.

These bins will not only accommodate 15% more suitcases, but they are also 10% lighter than the current ones. This will reduce the aircraft’s overall weight by 136 kg, resulting in lower fuel consumption.

In the case of the A220-300 model, the new bins will allow 19 more passengers to bring full-size carry-on suitcases onboard.

The Airspace cabin interior also includes a redesigned cabin ceiling and lighting for the overhead bin covers.

The first aircraft with the new interior will be delivered to airlines in 2026. Air Canada will be the launch customer for the A220 equipped with the Airspace cabin.

Airbus has announced that airlines will have the option to retrofit previously delivered A220s with the new design, though the cost for this upgrade has not been disclosed.

The A220 was originally developed by the Canadian company Bombardier and was initially named the C Series. In 2018, Airbus acquired the project and rebranded it as the A220.

The A220 is a narrow-body aircraft intended for short- and medium-haul routes, but flying on it offers an experience comparable to that of a wide-body aircraft.

The A220 cabin features wider seats and more spacious overhead bins. The aircraft also boasts larger windows, wider aisles, and more spacious lavatories.
