American Airlines hand luggage allowance in 2024

The hand luggage allowance on American Airlines flights is the same for all passengers. It does not depend on the route or the travel class. In this article avianews.com analyzes the American Airlines hand luggage rules for 2024.

Hand luggage size and weight on American Airlines flights

American Airlines allows two hand luggage items in planes: one carry-on bag and one personal item.

The carry-on bag must be up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) in size. The bag’s handles and wheels must fit these dimensions.

The personal item should be at most size 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm). You must place it under the seat in front of you.

Weigh restrictions do not apply to carry-on bags and personal items. It means you can bring as heavy hand luggage as you can lift.

Additional hand luggage

American Airlines allows the following items as additional hand luggage free of charge:

  • Diaper bags (1 per child),
  • Breast pump,
  • Small, soft-sided cooler of breast milk,
  • Child safety seats, strollers, and medical or mobility devices.

When should you check your hand luggage in?

American Airlines deploys the planes with less space for hand luggage on the regional routes operated by American Eagle.

Due to this fact, you will be asked to check your carry-on bag. You can take only a personal item with you.

The airline’s staff will check your carry-on bag at the gate free of charge. You will receive your carry-on bag back on the jet bridge after your arrival.

This rule does not apply on American Eagle flights operated by Embraer 175 planes. These planes allow both a carry-on bag and a personal item.
